How Technology Has Changed Our Lives - 1871 Words

Two girls sit in silence together, one on her laptop the other on her phone. They sit across the table from one another. They obviously know one another, but say nothing as they eat and work. A college aged boy talks loudly on the phone in the dining hall, sitting by himself. He is gesticulating wildly to his conversational partner, despite the other person being an undeterminable distance from him from the point of view of the observer. In the middle of a conversation with his friend at dinner, a boy pulls out his cell phone and checks something. The friends stops talking and checks his phone as well. Conversation ceases. Whether we like it or not, technology is changing when and how we interact with others. This change in interaction†¦show more content†¦Four of them are chatting while two are completely absorbed in phones. Almost every member of the group has a phone out, though not all in use. This scene observed in a residential eating area would have looked very different even just a few decades ago. In the past it was expected that suits and dress clothes were worn when out in public. Baby boomers changed that with business casual as the norm, and now millennials have normalized yoga pants and basketball shorts as a staple in almost every wardrobe. American culture has getting gradually more relaxed with each passing generation. This aspect of life and culture was accelerated by the recent technology shift and spike in social media. Enter the phone, and with it a culture of casual apathy; the amount of accessibility in every aspect of life has ushered in a culture of general acceptance leaving little room for an uptight sense of tradition. Eating has always been a lynchpin in social interaction, from casual coffee dates to ballroom dinners, meals in company have brought people together since the invention of community. There are few other times in which people are willing to plan and gather together but, everyone needs to eat hence a common ground is already established making restaurants a gathering place for people of all social statuses.
